Plastic2Food

Description:

The worm team is dedicated to the research of plastic eating worms and the positive impact that they can have on our world. The world currently faces a massive plastic waste issue, the likes of which we have never dealt with before. Our goal is to leverage organisms with the ability to remediate styrofoam, such as mealworms, fungi, and bacteria to help mitigate this problem. Landfills in the US are comprised of 30% styrofoam by volume. Our goal as a team is to create a way to minimize the amount of styrofoam waste that UCLA uses. We leverage the styrofoam degrading capabilities of bacteria, fungi, and mealworms to create a sustainable and closed loop system to bio-remediate UCLA’s styrofoam waste.
